March 9: Birth of WR Soepratman and Commemoration of National Music Day

1. Wage Rudolf Soepratman Born, 1903
The creator of the national anthem of Indonesia, namely Indonesia Raya, Wage Rudolf (WR) Soepratman was born on March 9, 1903, in Jatinegara, Purworejo, Central Java.
WR Soepratman's birth date was also designated as National Music Day, although many argue that he was born on March 19, 1903.
2. The Alaska Earthquake Shakes, 1957
An earthquake measuring 8.3 on the Richter scale occurred in the Andreanof Islands, Alaska. The quake also triggered tsunami waves in the Pacific Ocean which caused extensive damage in Hawaii and Oahu.
3. First Barbie on Display, 1959
Barbie dolls for the first time exhibited and sold at the American Toy Festival in New York, United States (US) on March 9, 1959. This date was also set as the birthday of the doll.
4. Commemoration of National Music Day
Every March 9 is designated as the National Music Day through Presidential Decree (Keppres) No. 10 of 2013 which was ratified by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the time.
Previously, Megawati Soekarnoputri had planned the National Music Day on March 10, 2003, marked by pressing the official website of the Indonesian Artist, Singer, Songwriter and Recording Music Association (PAPPRI) website.
It is known, the National Music Day was set on March 9 as a commemoration of the birthday of Wage Rudolf Soepratman. Although the date of birth of the songwriter Indonesia Raya is still debated.
